The definition and purpose of graphic design and its relation to art has always been debated. Society generally recognizes design as the same as advertising, purposed to sell a product. Personally I view design as a medium of communication, using tools such as color, hierarchy, type, imagery to convey a clear message, or to serve a purpose. Therefore the skills of design could be used not only to sell a commercial purpose, it could send any message to the world on broader terms.
Although I do think that it is very hard to separate design with consumerism and commercial advertising, as it sets the stage for design. Also consumer advertising is influential towards the style of advertising today. This is also recognized in the writing.
